Esteban Ocon left with mixed feelings after P6

Having dreamt of a podium result following his P3 on the Monza grid, Esteban Ocon had “mixed feelings” after finishing sixth at the Italian Grand Prix.

The Force India driver started Sunday’s 53-lap Italian Grand Prix from a career-best third place on the grid and was running P2 on the opening lap.

He lost that position to Valtteri Bottas and was then passed by Sebastian Vettel before doing a valiant job holding off Lance Stroll and Kimi Raikkonen.

But, as the race played out, Ocon also fell to Raikkonen and then Daniel Ricciardo.

“It’s mixed feelings I would say,” he told reporters after the race.

“Happy with P6, definitely, but I wanted my podium, which I didn’t get.

“I’m still hungry for it, but I think we maximised the result.

“Really the Ferraris were faster than us, I had a good fight with them.

“I thought I could keep Raikkonen behind, but I didn’t manage it, and the Red Bull was faster.

“P6 and P3 in qualifying, I think that’s the maximum we could have done this weekend.”

The Frenchman, who is contesting his first full season in Formula 1, says he’s not giving up on that dream of a top-three result as he believes Force India have a car that is capable of a podium finish.

“I think for sure today we didn’t have the pace to achieve it, but you never know in the future,” he said. “It looks like we have a fast car all of the time.

“Today there were no DNFs, nothing, so the luck was not totally on our side on that aspect. If it rains or if something happens, I’m still there and I still want to get it.”
